And Now: NAO
"I'm in love with this girl" I said and pressed play.
My computer screen displayed the Soundcloud page belonging to UK based singer Nao.
"I found her through Disclosure, she's featured on my other favorite song on their new album."
My boyfriend smirked at me and replied, "they're like your own personal Soundcloud, you find everything through them." Kind of true. Point taken sir.
"Superego" is the Nao assisted track on Disclosure's sophomore album, Caracal, that struck me as soon as I listed to it. Instinctively I pulled up Soundcloud, searched for her and smiled when I found that she'd released two EPs, February 15 and So Good.
My addictive nature shows itself in very few instances and the moment I find new music that sinks with me, it appears.
"Good Girl" became my go to as I familiarized myself with her catalogue. The lyrics are cleverly woven and paint a tale of broken expectations between a guy and a love interest. She, in first person, plays the part of the good girl he's seeking. As the story unravels we find that she's just not that interested and this track is her gentle way of saying "thanks, but no thanks". It's all good, it's all good.
In a Pitchfork article Nao describes the sum of her sound as "wonky funk." We also learn that she grew up utterly obsessed with perfection, ironic because one of her more uptempo, feel good cuts, "Golden", begins: perfect is overrated...
With a Disclosure album feature, a performance at the 2015 Apple Music Festival and an upcoming UK tour on the horizon I'm curious to see what the songstress pulls out of her hat next. Both EPs, while fundamentally similar have extraordinarily different feelings yet are equally great material. I just hope she doesn't keep me waiting much longer.
Until there's more, repeat button on these.
